Accessibility
Verifone Navigator is a PIN-entry solution for the Verifone V660-P terminals. It enables low-vision or blind cardholders to enter their PIN independently and securely using touch screens.
When Navigator is activated, the non-tactile touchscreen is transformed into a universal keypad with audio confirmation.
The Navigator solution has three modes:
- 'Accessibility mode'– Supports blind and low vision cardholders with sound to aid orientation and provide step-by-step instructions.
- 'Assistance mode' – Supports people with low vision or colour blindness by adjusting font size and colour contrast and adding audio feedback on payment screens.
'Training mode' – A training exercise to help terminal operators become familiar with accessibility.
Terminal transaction with accessibility options
Mode PIN entry mechanism
‘Accessibility mode’
To activate 'Accessibility mode':
- Be in the 'Present Card' screen.
- Tap the yellow accessibility icon.
- Select ‘Speech for Vision Impaired’.
NOTE: If ‘Accessibility mode’ is activated by double-tapping the ‘Present Card’ screen, the cardholder must double-tap to select an account type and enter their PIN.
However, if 'Accessibility mode' is activated by single tapping the yellow accessibility icon, the terminal will prompt the cardholder to choose their preferred selection method.
Once 'Accessibility mode' is turned on, screen prompts will be read aloud to the cardholder.
To process a ‘Purchase transaction’ in ‘Accessibility mode’:
- Enter the transaction amount into the terminal.
- Tap ‘Purchase’
- Activate ‘Accessibility mode’.
Terminal will click to indicate it is in 'Accessibility mode'. Once activated, the terminal will announce the total amount of the purchase and direct cardholder to present their card.
NOTE: It may be necessary to increase the volume of the announcements to ensure the voice prompts can be heard clearly by the cardholder. To do this use the volume buttons on the left side of the terminal.
- Cardholder can select an account by swiping left or right to display the next account option. Each option is vocalised.
- When the correct option is heard, the cardholder uses the selection method they choose to select their preferred option.
- The cardholder is prompted to enter their PIN by voice prompts.
NOTE: When prompted to enter their PIN by voice, the screen appears blank. However, there is a virtual number grid similar to a telephone key pad that the cardholder can use to enter their PIN.
It is recommended that the cardholder positions their finger in a corner of the screen. The terminal will beep as the cardholder moves their finger along each number. This allows the cardholder to count the number of beeps heard, and use the direction they moved their finger to figure out the numbers.
- The cardholder selects the correct number using the selection method they have chosen (at the ‘Present card’ screen) and double taps the dimpled buttons.
- Audio prompts let the cardholder know their current transaction step.
- The terminal will process the transaction and display and verbalise ‘Approved’ or ‘Declined’.
- Audio prompts inform the cardholder when the payment is completed and asks them to remove the card, if it is still inserted.
- Cardholder selects preferred receipt option.
Assistance mode
To activate ‘Assistance mode’:
- Tap the yellow accessibility icon on the ‘Present Card’ screen.
- Tap ‘Colour / Large Text’ to change the screen background.
- Cardholder is prompted to select the contrast colour that best assists them by tapping on one of the four colour options presented on the screen.
NOTE: The screens throughout the rest of the transaction will now display the chosen colour scheme. Screen prompts are read aloud, and the virtual keypad is optimised to improve visibility for vision-impaired and colour-blind cardholders.
Accessibility training mode

Verifone Navigator comes with a training mode function to demonstrate how to enter a PIN in ‘Accessibility mode'. It is recommended that staff complete this training so they have a better understanding of how Navigator works from a cardholder’s perspective.
To start ‘Training mode’:
- Tap the yellow accessibility icon on the ‘Present card' screen.
- Tap ‘Training for Vision Impaired’.
- Once ‘Training mode’ is enabled, screen prompts are read aloud.
